Partitioning, a Novel Approach to Mitigate the Risk and Impact of African Swine Fever in Affected AreasPartitioning, a Novel Approach to Mitigate the Risk and Impact of African Swine Fever in Affected Areas

In this article, EpiX and collaborators from the University of Minnesota propose Partitioning as a cost-effective framework to help producers reduce their risk of ASF introduction as well as their losses in case of ASF outbreak.

Dr. Solenne Costard, lead consultant at EpiX and main author of the article explains, “As African swine fever (ASF) continues to expand geographically, supplementary control strategies are needed to reduce disease risk and impact in affected areas”. We argue that better on-farm risk management - including on-farm surveillance and early reporting - will increase when the economic incentives of individual producers are aligned with that of competent authorities, such that individual producers are better off when outbreaks get reported early. Partitioning is a way to introduce such economic motivations for individual producers while also maintaining sounds disease control strategies at the national level.
